Online photo gallery, exhibit bring Flood of ’55 to life

One of the photos from the archives of the Torrington Register and Winsted Evening Citizen on display at the new Register Citizen Newsroom Cafe at 59 Field Street and part of an interactive map and photo gallery on RegisterCitizen.Com.

When The Register Citizen opened its Newsroom Cafe in December, we launched with an exhibit of historic photos of the Flood of 1955 from the archives of the Torrington Register and Winsted Evening Citizen.

Community Engagement Editor Kaitlyn Yeager capitalized on the strong interest in the exhibit by soliciting additional photos from readers, and turned that into an interactive online photo gallery.

Kaitlyn used Picasa to marry the photos to a Google Map of Torrington and Winsted. Click on a photo, and the location where it was taken (identified with the help of the Torrington Historical Society and readers)  pops up on a Google Map. And vice versa, click on a photo icon on the map, and you can see what that neighborhood looked like in the wake of the 1955 flood.
